What Is GB 18401 Textile Testing?

GB 18401 is China's mandatory national standard that sets safety requirements for all textile products sold domestically. It covers formaldehyde content, pH value, banned azo dyes, colorfastness to water and perspiration, and peculiar odor. Whether you produce baby clothing, adult apparel, or household fabrics, you must obtain a valid GB 18401 test report from a CNAS-accredited laboratory before your textiles can be legally imported or distributed. For many products, this report is also a prerequisite for CCC certification or meeting labeling requirements under GB/T 5296.4.

Our textile & apparel testing service guides foreign fashion and home textile brands through the entire China fabric safety compliance journey. We coordinate laboratory testing, identify potential risks in advance, and deliver the final test report — all without requiring you to set up a local office. With TEK China, you can navigate the imported garment quality inspection process efficiently.

Our GB 18401 Textile Testing Process

1. Product Category & Standard Scope

We classify your product into Category A (baby), B (direct skin contact), or C (indirect skin contact) to define exactly which GB 18401 test items apply, including any additional standards like GB 31701 for children's products.

2. Laboratory Testing

Samples undergo formaldehyde extraction, azo dye screening, pH measurement, and colorfastness to water, perspiration, and rubbing at a CNAS-accredited lab. We track testing and resolve any deviations.

3. Report & Label Review

We deliver the GB 18401 test report. If required, we also review your Chinese care labels and fiber composition labels to ensure they meet GB/T 29862 requirements.

4. Ongoing Support & Renewal

Once testing is complete, you receive the report valid for your production batch. We also support periodic retesting for new seasons or material changes and can assist with full CCC certification for garments when needed.

Products That Require GB 18401 Testing

Any textile product intended for sale in China must comply with GB 18401 safety requirements. Common categories include:

  • Apparel & Clothing: shirts, dresses, jeans, underwear, sportswear, and outerwear — tested for formaldehyde and azo dyes
  • Baby & Children's Products: infant clothing, bibs, diapers, and bedding — stricter limits under Category A
  • Home Textiles: bed sheets, pillowcases, towels, curtains, and upholstery fabrics — checked for colorfastness and pH
  • Leather & Fur Goods: leather jackets, bags, and shoes — also tested for GB 20400 leather-specific substances
  • Fabric & Yarn: rolls of woven, knitted, and dyed fabrics sold directly to manufacturers or consumers

If your product is children's clothing, additional GB 31701 testing for drawstrings and small parts may also be required. Contact us with your product details for a free textile testing scope assessment.

Documents Required for GB 18401 Textile Testing

To initiate textile and apparel testing, foreign manufacturers need to prepare the following (we provide translation and documentation support):

  • Product description including fiber composition and intended use
  • Representative samples for each color and material type
  • Existing Oeko-Tex or international test reports (for gap analysis)
  • Manufacturer business license and supply chain information
  • Application form completed by our team
  • Letter of authorization for TEK China to act as testing agent

GB 18401 Testing Timeline & Cost

The typical textile safety testing process takes 3 to 6 working days from sample submission to report issuance, depending on the number of test items and colors. Products requiring only basic test items can be completed within 3 days.

Cost factors include the number of colorways, whether azo dye testing is needed, and additional child safety standards. We provide a fixed-price proposal after evaluating your product — no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions About GB 18401 Textile Testing

What is GB 18401 and is it mandatory for all textiles?
GB 18401 is China's national safety standard for textile products. All textiles sold in China, whether imported or locally made, must comply. The standard covers formaldehyde, pH, banned azo dyes, colorfastness, and odor. A test report to GB 18401 is required for customs clearance and market surveillance.
How does GB 18401 relate to Oeko-Tex or REACH?
While Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and EU REACH have similar chemical limits, China has its own specific thresholds and test methods. An existing Oeko-Tex certificate may help in pre-assessment, but a GB 18401 report from a Chinese CNAS-accredited lab is still required for the Chinese market.
What are the GB 18401 product categories A, B, and C?
Category A applies to baby and infant products with the strictest formaldehyde limit (≤20 mg/kg). Category B covers products in direct skin contact (e.g., underwear, shirts) with ≤75 mg/kg. Category C is for products not in direct skin contact (e.g., coats, curtains) with ≤300 mg/kg.
Do I need a separate test report for each color or fabric?
Each distinct fabric composition and dye lot should be tested. However, multiple colors from the same fabric base can often be covered under one report through a rationalized sampling plan. We can advise on the most efficient approach.
Is GB 18401 testing enough to sell garments in China?
GB 18401 covers safety requirements. You will also need proper Chinese labels (fiber composition, care instructions, country of origin) according to GB/T 5296.4 and GB/T 29862. Some garments may also require CCC certification. Our team can guide you through the full labeling and certification process.
